So 2017 has been a huge year for make up! There has been thousands of releases! Some amazing.. some.. not so amazing! So of course, there is a room for a good favourites and un-favourites post!! Sadly, I had a huge makeup clear out before Christmas, so a lot of the things I didn’t enjoy have been donated, or chucked away!! But of what I do have left, and kept, I wanted to share what and why I didn’t enjoy these products!
Just a quick disclaimer! If you really enjoy these products, please don’t feel offended! Sadly they just didn’t work out for me, and i’m so glad they worked for you!! It means you spent your money on something you love, and what could be better? Also, all the brands i’m mentioning I really love. But these specific products just didn’t work out!
Kiko – Face Make up Fixer.
So recently I done a little shop in Kiko as they had their ‘black Friday sale’ on (blog post on Haul!) and I came across this! Now I love the fact its a continuous spray, but the smell is almost unbearable! Even Michael has picked up on the smell, it lingers on your face all day! And it feels like i’m spraying NOTHING on my face!!! So this was a huge no for me i’m afraid!
Barry M – In The Glow, Tahitian Body Oil.
This was an impulse purchase for my holiday to Cyprus! I thought this would look amazing over a slight tan! Sadly, it just looked like oil on my skin, and being quite pale, I had all the chance to see a slight hint of colour but I just felt like an oily mess! Also again the smell, it lasts for DAYS on your hands and skin, it almost gets stuck up your nose! I gave it to my mum and the exact reaction came from her! So no no!
Collection – Lasting Perfection Colour Correcting Concealer in Green 2.
The lasting perfection concealer is an all time favourite of mine, i’ve loved it for years and years, gone through countless bottles and was the first proper concealer I ever purchased for myself! So when Collection came out with a colour correcting formula I was straight down to Boots (Our drugstore in the UK) to grab it!!
I was gutted to find this didn’t cover anything! Green is supposed to mask redness, and this just blended away into my foundation! It wouldn’t stay on my skin, and it just made my skin look super drying! So not only did it blend away, it made my skin look gross! I love the Yellow one they have, but for some reason this just doesn’t live up to expectations! Totally, totally gutted!
Rimmel London – Insta Duo Contour Stick in Light.
Rimmel brought out their ‘Insta’ range in the summer, and this was the first thing I decided to try! I feel like its really difficult to blend on the skin, and both the Contour and Highlight sticks move all the foundation underneath! The contour is super patchy, and the highlight is so subtle you may aswell not have anything on! Although I do like the Insta Power they brought out in the collection, so I would recommend spending your money on that!
theBalm Cosmetics – Put A Lid On It Eyelid Primer.
‘Mary Lou Manizer’ Highlighter is my favourite thing from theBalm! So seeing how much I loved that, I needed to try more! I saw Lisa Eldridge use this in a video, so obviously this was going to be my next purchase! I hate to say, it done nothing for my eyeshadow. I feel it gave me an oily base, and didn’t help my shadow stay on, or look good. It made my shadow go on patchy, and was a ‘start again’ situation, which was super frustrating! Think i’ll just stick to my highlighter for now!
Sleek Makeup – Creme Contour Kit in Light.
I saw Nic from Pixiwoo use this in a video not to long ago, and I loved the way it made her skin look! So I popped out and brought it, and I did NOT get the same result! This stuff made my face look so greasy, and blended into this big blob of mud! The lighter shades just made my foundation blend away, so there was nothing left under my eyes! And I feel like it made my pores look even bigger than they are! And we don’t need that!!
NYX – HD ‘High Definition’ Eye Shadow Base in ESB04.
Again, I love so many NYX products, their Tame&Frame Tinted Brow Pomade is a staple in my collection! But this totally did not work! No pigmentation, and again it just moved my concealer around my eyes to look like a big un-blended mess! Another start again job! So sadly, I wouldn’t recommend this IF you had oily eyelids! I think this could work if you have dry skin!
Kiko – Standout Volume Mascara in Black.
This made my lashes look more flat than they already are! I curled them like I do everyday, built and built and built it up, and it gave me nothing! I feel as if the formula is super wet, and the bristles in the brush are so spread apart, it can’t coat your lashes properly! Again I love Kiko, and they do some amazing mascaras! But this one almost flattened my lashes!
Maybelline New York – Dream Flawless Nude Fluid-Touch Foundation in 10 Ivory.
Now, this isn’t a new products, I saw it in TK Maxx once and was super intrigued by it! So me and my BBF decided to buy and try it… OILY MESS. First I got the lightest colour ‘Ivory’, and it was so dark! And their darkest shade isn’t much darker, so shade range is terrible, and i’m so shocked, because maybelline usually have a pretty decent colour selection! And their foundations are some of the best at the drugstore! Secondly, the pigment and the oils in the makeup really separate! You have to give it a really good shake, and even then it almost doesn’t mix together properly! But I still gave it a try, and the oils in my skin were already seeping through once id finished my makeup! I even tried to bake, use setting spray and nothing seemed to help! It gave my skin a super weird gritty feeling aswell… pores looked HUGE! Giant no!
I was so excited for this launch!!! I LOVE the foundation! (In my favourites, watch this space!) But this just didn’t do anything as a primer, it didn’t pro-long my foundation wear, and I feel as if it didn’t mix well with the Huda Faux Filter foundation at all! The smell is so pungent aswell! It will not leave your skin all day, and as the foundation smells the same, its just way to over powering! This would probably work much better on a dry skin type, but for me and my combo skin, it didn’t work at all!
AND that folks is it for 2017!! Again I love all these brands, but sadly these products didn’t work out for me! But if the worked for you, I’m so happy they did!
So as 2017 comes to an end, I wanted to start writing about my favourite palettes of the year! An all round makeup favourites and un-favourites will be coming soon (watch this space!). But eyeshadow is hands down my favourite make up! and I love buying them! So I feel as if, this deserved it’s very own post! I have 6 different palettes to talk about, all different in their each unique way!
These 6 palettes have been a total stand out for me this year! I have an ever-growing palette obsession, but I always reach for these guys! I was originally going to do 5 but I couldn’t whittle it down!! I love every single one for different reasons! So… shall we?
First up, is my most used palette of the year! The Anastasia Beverly Hills, Modern Renaissance Palette. Im totally obsessed with warmer tones, and this doesn’t disappoint! This is probably one of the most talked about palettes of the year, and for all good reasons.
ABH smashed it with the pigmentation of the palette. EVERY SINGLE SHADE is beautiful! I don’t feel as if any of them are chalky or patchy in anyway way! There is some slight fall down, but they are so creamy in texture, it just makes up for it! They blend totally effortlessly on the eyes, and you can create a subtle look, or go all the way to a deep, rich smokey eye!
The colour lasts all day long on the lid, being just as bold as when first being applied to the eyelid! They have a really good selection of colours! Great crease and transition shades, as well as deep, bold colours! I usually find myself gravitating toward the more brown/orange colours, as I enjoy the look I can create with them on my eyes! But the pinky tones are just as nice, I know a lot of people that use them all the time!
This is 1 of my most recommend palettes to every one who asks, and every one loves it!
Of course… this beauty had to make my top 6 list! The Jaclyn Hill Palette By Morphe has got to be the palette that BROKE the internet! I remember when this palette was first released in the USA, and I was so desperate to get my hands on it! I almost caved in, and paid the extortionate shipping and customs fee, but then the fairy godmother they called ‘Beauty Bay’ released it, and I could not wait to get my hands on this!! I sat in a que from 9am trying to get this! And clearly so many other people were aswell and the site crashed! Finally, after 3 hours of waiting, about 60,000 in an online que.. I got it!
And.. Im so glad I did, because OMG this could be my favourite of the year! Due to not having it very long, there is no way i’ve used this as much as my ABH one (pictured first), but still my firm favourite of the year. The special formulation is something Morphe should be proud of, the creamy texture of every shadow it on another level! Its a palette I can look at and use every single colour! The pops of greens, blue and the purple at the bottom are gorgeous colours, and it really helped me to try out more bold looks! It paid off, everyone complimented my eyes! I used ‘Pool Party’ for a night out, and even my boyfriend had a double take! To this day he still talks about that look!
This is so versatile, and if you was travelling, this could be the only palette you would need! It has everything you could want, the matte creamy colours, browns, oranges, reds, pinks, the pop of colour! What else? Now this is a very warm shade palette, so if you much prefer cooler tones, this may not be the one for you! But that should not stop you from trying this, if there is one palette that could change your mind, this would be it! And I would re-purchase over and over again!
The only thing I wish it had, was a mirror. I know Morphe palettes, don’t usually come with a mirror, but as a Beauty Guru herself, i’m surprised that one wasn’t included! And that would be my only negative about this.
Huda Beauty is known for their famous eyeshadow palettes! Mainly the Rose Gold, and the newly released Desert Dusk palettes. But on November 1st this year, they released 4 new mini palettes, all with 9 colours! Now, I would have thought that the ‘Warm Brown Obsessions’ would have stood out to me the most, BUT as soon as I saw this colour combination, it was straight in my basket! The dusky pinks and the plums really caught my eye!
The combinations of the colours are incredible. You can use every colour with each other so easily, and still create so many looks! The matte shades are a little more on the chalky side, but once they are blended on to your lid, they look effortless. The 3 shimmer shades are blinding! Again, I use my fingers to get the best pay off, but a little fix plus or water on a brush and you can still get an incredible effect. I also feel these colours can suit any skin tone!
I think these little palettes are a great start if you haven’t tried the Huda Beauty shadows before, as the bigger palettes are a pretty eye watering £56 GBP. With these only being £25, it is definitely worth trying these before going big! And they are a great size for travel! Chuck in your make up bag and go!
This palette has a cute little story behind it! When I was very ill a couple of months back, my boyfriend wanted to find a way to cheer me up, and I was awoken to a beautiful bunch of flowers, and this! Safe to say it 100% put a smile on my face, he knows how to make me happy!!
But that isn’t the only reason this is in my top 6. I feel as if I don’t have anything like this in my collection. There are hundreds of matte palettes, but I feel as if this is the best for transition, crease and outer corner shades! They totally live up to the standard of the UD eyeshadows, a little more on the chalky side, but again, once on the lid and blended out, they look gorgeous! And I love the matte black in this, everyone needs a matte black!
If you don’t like an all matte look, you will need to reach for a different palette, to get a beautiful shimmer or metallic, but I feel you wouldn’t buy this palette if that bothered you anyway! A great staple in my collection!
This was the first product i’ve tried from Jouer! I heard so many beauty influencers talking about how blinding it was, I couldn’t wait to try it out!
Clearly, this isn’t a palette that you can make a loads of different looks out of! The six shimmers are more to compliment other shadows, rather than each other! So unless you are just looking for glitters, you will need some matte eyeshadows (or shimmers by all means) if you want to create a full look with this!
I find the best way to apply these is with a wet brush and a glitter primer underneath! I use the NYX glitter primer, £8, as a base as they can have a little fall down, and from different techniques, feel as if this makes the colours last longer.
The only shade that I feel could have been so much better is ‘Bikini’. The standard and pigmentation of this shade is no-where near as good as the other 5. I feel as if there isn’t much colour pay off, and looks like a sheer glitter on your eyes.
Regardless of that 1 shade. I take this everywhere with me. If i’m travelling, this palette gives me a great selection of glittery, metallic shades without having to risk taking a full pot of glitter with me! Star Light, and Skinny Dip are stand out shades, and they can go with pretty much any look you can come up with!
Iv used this on lots of different people, with different skin tones, and no matter what it always looks just as stunning!
Now, this isn’t the latest edition in the Tartelette family! I purchased this in Sephora, when I was in New York last November. The reason I decided to include this, is because I haven’t stopped using it since! (As you can see by the state of it!!)
First of all, it has a lovely smell! You open it, and it almost smells chocolatey! But that isn’t the reason I love it!
This is my go to for a more natural look! I love this on days where I don’t want to much on my eyes, just something girly, pinky and golden! This has lovely colour pay off, and blends into the eyes beautifully. And I often use the shade Charmer as a base for a lot of my other shadows aswell! The shade Funny Girl is almost a firm fave for me! The darker colours I feel can help take my look from Day to Night! A beautiful smokey eye can be created which I love!
I really need to get my hands on the other 2 Tartelette palettes! They’re all beautiful!
And that is it!! My stand out’s for 2017! I cannot wait for what 2018 has in store for eyeshadow! Bring it on!
So, this year me and my boyfriend Michael jetted off to sunny Cyprus for 7 nights in September for a well deserved break! So here is a break down of our holiday, what we done, what we ate, and my overall thoughts of the holiday.
We booked and flew with Jet2holidays, from London Stansted, who I couldn’t recommend enough! The customer service was amazing, the planes themselves were really new and clean, and they didn’t have that ‘airplane’ smell, which I know a lot of people really despise! (Me included!!) The cabin crew were lovely, and even the plane food was half decent.. although how good can it get really?
An overall look of the hotel.
We stayed in the Cypria Maris Beach Hotel & Spa, in Paphos! This was an adult only, all inclusive hotel. This stood out to us, due to the amazing reviews and ‘adult only’ just drew us in more! Being a young couple, it was nice to lay by a pool without lots going on, just music, cocktails, sun and the pool was perfect for us! It also had its on private section of the beach, with a beach bar and lots of different water sports. We also received a glass of champagne on arrival, and our bags were in the room waiting for us when we got there, which was of course lovely, but also super handy!
The hotel is around a 5 minute walk from the main town, there wasn’t overly a lot to do, it was mainly restaurants and bars. Nothing ‘club’ like! But that couldn’t have bothered us less, it was nice to walk through the town at night, with all the lights, but none of the madness of clubbing! (We do enjoy this though!). Mainly we sat around the pool at night, having free cocktails (perks of all inclusive) that were mainly vodka and maybe a drop of orange! And playing UNO! The entertainment was terrible, and extremely cheesy, and not many people seemed to be to into it anyway. The entertainment team tried their best, but there was a mere turnout of around 5 couples a night.
The hotel had three restaurants. They had the main dining area, a greek and a sushi bar! When you check in, you will be given 1 free token for the Greek and Sushi bars, but the main dining hall is where they serve all the main food. If you want to go back to with the Greek or Sushi you will have to pay a set fee for each individual.
The food was amazing, but was so repetitive. The first couple of nights we loved, but we went back our 3rd and was a little disappointed to see there wasn’t much more variety of food on offer. And though the desserts looked utterly mouthwatering.. it was nothing like id ever tasted before, and not in a good way! We stayed away from most of them after that! Breakfast and lunch was the same, delicious but very repetitive. But that bothered us less, as we ate mostly Humous and pita bread, totally fine with us!
We don’t really each Sushi (well.. Michael does, I don’t! Sorry Mike!), but we did take advantage on using the Greek restaurant! Humous and pita bread is my number 1 fave snack, and this hotel didn’t disappoint when it came to the greek food!! The only downside was, I’ve never been served so much food in my life! There was 4 courses, each as big as each other, and we almost felt guilty for not being able to eat it all! When it came to desert we refused it, but they insisted on bringing it out! The food was incredible, very traditional Greek, but the volume of food almost overpowered the experience of it all.
We also ate out a couple of times to get some variety in our diets! We found the most amazing Italian restaurant, which was situated right in the middle of town on a roof top, all open and so relaxing. It was pretty busy, but our food came out really quick and didn’t disappoint! Our last night we ate at a really dainty restaurant, it was fully booked but they managed to squeeze us in. We are so glad they did, it was hands down one of the best meals I have ever eaten! I also had the best Creme Brûlée I’ve ever eaten in my life! Sadly for the life of me, I can’t remember what it was called, but I wish I could! It could be raved about all day and all night long!
Our daily activities.
We had a day at the waterpark. This totally flopped, because as it turned out, it was mainly for children.. we aren’t children so it wasn’t much use to us! We also went Go Karting, we heard it was a really good place. We got there and it was a bit of a dump and a little dirty but Michael loved it! I wasn’t a huge fan, and it took us longer to walk their than first anticipated! (yes we walked in that heat, why we didn’t get a taxi I don’t know!) Apart from that, we mainly chilled by the pool, walked around the little towns and hid in the shade! It was stifling hot out there! And with a pasty complexion like mine, I get very sunburnt, very easily! You can’t really complain though, compared to the weather we have in dreary England, it was delightful feeling the warm sun on your skin at 9am, instead of a bitter wind or rain!
An overall summary of the holiday.
If you want a beautiful hotel, with lovely staff and a nice chilled out vibe.. This is the hotel for you! If you want more of a clubbing scene with lots going on, entertainment through and through, you won’t enjoy this! BUT I would still recommend this place to anyone, and one day we would love to go back!
For Christmas this year, my boyfriend Michael wondered into John Lewis, walking the makeup isles, and spotted the new ‘Naked Heat’ palette by Urban Decay and told me he instantly thought ‘now that is something Ellie would love’! (The boy knows). As you will find out, I am a warm tone kind of girl!! I live and breathe for warm orange and brown tones. I feel as if they suit me the most, as I’m a very pale gal with blue eyes! The warm tones really help my eyes to pop!! I also do like to throw in some dark pinks and blinding silvers from time to time!
Now, due to being a new palette from Urban Decay this is already highly reviewed (very mixed reviews aswell I must add). But as I swatched and played with this, I just couldn’t resist writing my first makeup related post about it!! I totally forgot to photograph before I had a go with it, but still pictures do it so much justice! This palette includes 12 brand new shades also.
First of all, the packaging is totally wonderful! Its eye catching, and so different from all the other naked palettes, as they are all very toned down, but this is just amazing! It really stands out in my palette collection!
Okay so, pigmentation is obviously up to all Urban Decay standards, as they are renowned for insane colour pay off! But they have the most amazing buttery texture, and they blend like a dream on the eyes, but there is a little bit of fall down, so just be aware of this! They also don’t swatch as well, but don’t let that stop you!! It’s totally deceiving!
I feel like the Matte shades have more colour pay off than the shimmery/metallic shades, but with a little water, or setting spray on your brush, they are blinding!! I usually use my fingers for the more shimmery shades, as I feel you will get the most out of your colours this way!
I just want to express, this palette is missing a more light golden shade for the lid. All the shimmery shades seem to be a little more on the darker side, so I feel as if I have to reach for another palette to be able to achieve this. BUT they have the best transition shades! The colours ‘Sauced’ and ‘Low Blow’ are the ones I reach for the most in my crease! The only shade that I think could have been a little better is ‘Ashes’. As the darkest shade, it could have been darker, and its probably the most patchy shade of them all aswell!
The brush that is included isn’t anything to rave about either, but regardless if a palette comes with a brush, I always reach for my own, so it would be nothing I would slate, as it doesn’t change how I feel about the palette.
Overall, if you enjoy the warmer things in life, I would 100% recommend it. I wouldn’t if you like cooler tones, as this doesn’t offer ‘cool’. (obvs the naked ‘heat’ gives it away, silly).
My Name is Ellie, I’m 20 years old from Essex, in the UK!
For years and years I have been reading thousands of blogs, anything from Makeup, to DIY and food! Watching my favourite people on youtube and admiring my favourite ‘instagramers’ being totally taken back by how amazing this community is.
So! I have finally decided to start a blog after all these years of debating with myself on whether or not I should! A decision every blogger has faced! My decision came when my best friend Danielle (ddlovesx) started her very own blog, and seeing how much she thoroughly enjoyed just made that choice 100% easier (as you can imagine, being BFF’s we are extremely similar)! Also, in the words of my boyfriend Michael, ‘go for it elz, you can do it’, so here we are!!
Having a huge passion for all things makeup and lifestyle, it only seemed right to release my passion to the world! Also, i love writing, and as someone who could write for hours and hours, i feel as if this is the place meant for me.
I cannot wait to share my favourite makeup, skin care, home and life style with you. (Might also get a few pictures of my pups, they love being photographed!!) 2018 is such a busy year, full of so many incredible adventures I want to be able to share with the world!! I really hope you all enjoy, and i can’t wait to start this blogging journey with a bang!
